I have no idea how many log cabin quilts I have made from her book over the last 32 years. I have also taught high school students to make this quilt. I'm not sure whether I've seen the newer book or not. The orginal book was before rotary cutters. Believe it or not, we tore our strips.
The last few times I have made this with a group of ladies working on the same quilt. There are always differences in our sewing. I did square up blocks about half way through, then added a wider than 2 1/2" strips, and then squared up the final time. The little differences in the block after the final row, don't show up with this method.
To me cutting the strips to length would add a lot of time.
Either way it is a fun block with so many possibilites. I live in a log house and consider this my favorite block. Have fun.

I have made several log cabin quilts, never cut the strips to size, only WOF strips, sew then cut. Just be careful with your cuts so they are straight! If your seams are fairly close, you will be OK and it sure works up faster. I recently did one with two of the sides black and the other two bright, bright, bright. Everyone loved it!
Needing information on the Eleanor Burns Log Cabin quilt from anyone who has made it. I had some E B instructions long ago, but I think she has revised them in recent years (not sure). I have heard her version is a good one, and would like to hear from someone who has made it. For that matter, I would like to hear from anyone who has made ANY Log Cabin quilt, and what you have to say about your method. Do you cut your strips to size, or cut long strips and sew and cut? Thanks so much.

I agree. I've only made one LC but I used EB's method & really enjoyed it. I do press more often than she does but that's just because I'm kinda anal about my pressing (my mom always taught me "Sew a seam, presss a seam").

I paper piece log cabin quilts. Cut your strips to the approximate size then sew on the line! I never, ever pre-cut strips, just eyeball them. Can also chain piece blocks, sew all #2s, 3s, 4s, etc. Couldn't be easier. Linda Causee books have easy log cabin patterns of all sizes. Hope this helps.
Maybe I am "quilt pattern challenged" but I always find EB's patterns confusing and "time wasting". This is just my opinion, so please don't flame me. EB has a huge following and I know many, many folks love her. I just can't seem to wrap my mind around her instructions, so I know it is ME and not EB. I do love her Sun Bonnet Sue patterns, though! :-)

Thank you all for your help! I have read your comments and will go over them again before I start cutting. I am not sure yet which way I will go. I am going to look at EB's latest instructions on a LC quilt before I decide. You have all been a great help, as always! Thanks again.
