I, too, would do it as PaperPrinces suggested. To me, this would be the easiest & fastest way. Just make sure you wash the added fabric maybe two or three times before adding to the quilt. This will take care of any shrinkage & or fading that the original quilt may have done over the years of washing.

Friday night I was at my girlfriend's house that wanted me to enlarge the quilts. We decided that it would be just as nice to get a bedcovering for under the quilt, that coordinates with the top quilt, that is larger than the top quilt. The amount that will hang down will actually look like part of the quilt or part of the bedskirt. She agreed with me that the quilt might look patched together if we tried to enlarge it. Thanks for all the suggestions. They may come in handy in the future.

This would work, take binding off, add pannels you have made and quilted and attach this way. So easy when you watch the video.

My mother added a border to a quilt that was finished and she just removed the binding (it was damaged and not on the bias) and added the border to the top and one to the backing, added batting then quilted it by hand and put on a new binding that was cut on the bias. Looked like it was supposed to be that way when she finished.

Enlarging the quilt
My mother-in-law had made us a log cabin quilt in the 1980’s that I finally decided was not big enough. I shopped for some similar fabrics, and then as Lisa did, I removed the binding. Then I made two borders, for the sides of the quilt so it would hang down the sides of the bed. The original quilt ended with the rust border; I do quilt as you go so I quilted the border pieces and then attached to the original quilt. I did make new binding that went well with the quilt. It was well worth doing. I made a medallion quilt with my guild a few years back and I am going to enlarge that also.
