I especially like Bonnie Hunter's quilts that are made from men's plaid, striped, and checked shirts. I think it's the selection of "manly fabrics" that makes a quilt manly. If a man will wear a plaid shirt, why wouldn't he use a quilt made from plaids?
CHeck out her books, "Scraps and Shirttails". She also has a second volume, "Scraps and Shirttails II". I was able to get them through interlibrary loan at my library.
I also like her Smoky Mountain Stars pattern which is free on her website, quiltville.com.

This is one I made for my brother. I told him it was for TV watching in his big comfy chair. He called me to say it was too good for TV watching. He displayed it over a bench in the livingroom. At least I know he liked it.

Pending colors, I just finished a "Male Lap Quilt". It is a string quilt done in browns, beige and black. Each square has a black beginning strip, which then made a good strong diagonal stipe diamond pattern......I kinda think of a 'male pattern' as more straight lines than curves, more simple than complex....

I am trying to attach a pic. My Dh doesn't like quilts, appreciates some but nothing makes him desire one. Well after 10 yrs into my journey through quilting, I found "the fabric" for him, then it took me more than 1 yr to find the pattern. It is very simple, not too "quilty" and he loooves it. Don't get discouraged, something will inspire you to make a quilt he will love and appreciate. Sorry the light is not good, the sashing is white not yellow like it seems.

LOVED your opening lines! Yes, this is a dilemma for me, too. It is time for me to make a quilt for my 20-yr-old son so I had him look at some patterns. It would not be his first choice of how to spend his free time, but I told him if he wanted a quilt then he would have to pick. Not going to spend a small fortune and time making a quilt and then him not really like it. So, after perusing the magazines he finally decided on the Labyrinth pattern.
Here is a link for some pics of quilts using this pattern: http://www.google.com/search?q=labyr...w=1024&bih=690
Long link...hope it works for you! If not, just google "labyrinth quilt pattern". Hope you can decide on one!

Google Images for City Quilts...a book by Cherri House (a member here, btw). Awesome quilts, perfect for sophisticated men.
