I love all of the different ways to do feathers and some of them are so original and not all of them overpower or make quilts stiff. Purely the choice of the quiltmaker and the quilter. I agree with Sadiemae.

However the quilting is done it should compliment the pieced top, when it gets too heavily quilted it seems to distort the piecing. Heavy quilting doesn't give me the snuggly/cuddly feeling of a quilt. Also, look at the Amish or Mennonite quilts, these quilts get used and are real beauties.

For my quilts I make I only do a large stipple. I like my quilts to be not so densely quilted, like the softer. All the flowers, leaves etc. are pretty, just not for my quilts.

I am sure you would all look at mine and say they are over quilted also, but that is the way I can practice quilting. I don't use pantos and I don't mark the quilting. I do the entire quilting freehand, so it requires a lot of practice.

i don't believe its just feathers that are over done.

i find many LA go over board with the quilting.

i prefer light quilting for quilts that intend to be used.

if its a show quilt or a wall hanging that you can quilt every inch otherwise you're just going over board.

I always thought I was the only who didn't like very heavily quilted quilts. Guess I was wrong!

I think feathers are wonderful if the quilt calls for it! One of the reasons I send a quilt out is so the LongArm pro can do things that I can not. If I could do feathers the way a Long ARm pro can you bet I would be doing them .. on the quilts that it fits with the overall design.

If one likes dense quilting, whether or not its a show quilt, then whats the big deal? If you dont like it, then dont do it or have it done. Pretty simple. Thats what makes us all unique. How boring would it be if all quilts were handquilted or all quilts were SID or all quilts had minimal quilting? By the way...feathers are a blast to do, oh..did I mention I love them? Do what you like or what makes you happy, but bashing others because you dont like it. well thats just silly. Have fun and Happy Quilting to all.

I love feathers, and I USED to do them when I hand quilted. You bet I would do them by machine if I had the confidence to try and they were right for the quilt. They're not right for the Asian one I'm quilting right now, but they'll be right for one I'll do in the future, and I will probably get my courage up and try FMQing feathers. It's interesting to me how so many have jumped on this and said they don't like feathers! I wonder how many will jump in and say they like feathers now that a couple of us have said we like them - LOL.
