The rag rugs were made from pieces to small for quilt block pieces. I leaned to sew by stichning these strings together on treadle sewing machine. then mother would braid them together for rugs. later years she used to make hooked rugs from the strings. there are patterns that you can buy to make string rugs. try one you will enjoy making one.

Wow congrats on getting mawmaws things... I got my mawmaws quilting stuff too... well her quilt tops, patterns, and sewing box... I am still hoping to get all the boxes of fabric she had left over... someday maybe. Where in east tennessee are you? I am in Ringgold GA right outside Chattanooga.

I'm very happy for you, what a wonderful gift from the past and your mamaw. I'm sure as you sort through the fabric it will bring back wonderful memories. You're lucky, as I have nothing from either set of grandparents, and very little from my mother. Treasure that gift and pass it on to future generations.

Make yourself a nice quilt from some of that fabric to wrap yourself in. Then everytime you're snuggled under the quilt you can think of your mamaw.
