Storm at Sea is a lovely design for a quilt. One thing to be aware of is that there are two variations of it. If you use this block:

you will end up with diamonds in each block being next to diamonds in the next block, like this:

If you use *parts* of the block, you can avoid have the diamonds next to each other, and get a quilt design like this:

(This has the blocks separated by small spaces so you can see what goes into each block.)
Both types make for lovely quilts - it's all a matter of personal preference. The picture you posted is of the second type.
If you search on-line for images of Storm at Sea quilts, you will discover a tremendous variety, as the colors chosen and how they are placed can create very different looks. It can be very inspiring!

amethyst...it's like anything....once you've been at something for awhile you get to know the ins and outs and recognize things that you, yourself may have had to look up before. It's just experience and there is only one way to get that!
Never hesitate to ask a question here. We love solving mysteries and sharing what we've learned along the way.

ditto to what others said .... you'll get there with the familiarity thing on these blocks!!
Some blocks get confusing, as there are several different names for the same block.
As far as I know SAS (Storm At Sea) only has one name.
However, with that being said, with different colour placements,
SAS can have many different looks, and can be easily not recognized.
Kind of like a chameleon!!
Here's one that I did ... with a Christmas twist!

Storm at Sea is kind of a fun one to do and has SO many possibilities. If you google Storm at Sea Layouts there are lots of fantastic color options some of which have secondary designs in them. I just did two Heart Shape runners by using only part of the Storm at Sea blocks.
