I don't recall having this problem at all with Coats and Clark thread so I'm going to assume the easiest solution is the right one. Will work with switching out the thread I have in the machine now with the C&C tonight and see if that works.

I have sometimes had to adjust my bobbin tension in addition to my top tension.

ok -- figured out what's the problem. My machine works best with Coats and Clark thread. I found a good quality open toe metal hopping foot and cranked up the top tension on my machine to 8! PERFECT STITCHES! Finally!!!!

This was my first thought as well. It looks like the bottom thread is just lying next to the fabric rather than locking into a stitch inside the fabric.
