You say you have a "darning foot". That is what you need.

An oven liner (rather than supreme slider) and a pair of garden gloves with the nubs on them is what works for me. I tried without either and couldn't move my fabric at all.

How old are your Kenmores? Some in the 80s were made by New Home (Janome bought them) so a foot for a New Home should work. Does either of the machines have a 2 position foot lift? Pfaff did on older machines.
Leah Day does have a a tutorial for a floating foot.

Here's a link to some sewing feet for Kenmore. If none of these, generic high or low shank whichever you have should work. http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/ken...sser-feet.aspx

I don' know if it will help you or not, but I've noticed less pull on the fabric when the stitch length is set on zero.
And lots of practice.

Are you dropping the feed dogs. When I was learning, I often forgot to do this. Keep trying it is a most relaxing way to quilt quickly. Also play music while you are quilting. It helps you keep a smooth flow to your stitching.

If they are the older Kenmores use the embroidery foot if you have one. It works the same way.

I agree that it takes about 8 hours of practice to get the feel of FMQ. Look at where you want your needle to go, not at your needle; it isn't going anywhere. HAVE FUN.

I have a Kenmore that I bought in early 90s and it has a darning foot that I use to free motion quilt. I set stitch length to zero and my feed dogs do not go down.
