I'm making a quilt for a friend and He has a full size bed.
what dimensions should the quilt be?
I've only made one normal quilt and all the others were baby quilts so I don't know the sizes very well.
thanks in advance!

Sorry, but there's no specific answer. A full mattress is 53" X 75" (I think Tartan's chart is in cm, no that can't be right?). You need to make some decisions. How much do you want to hang over the edges? 4"? 14"? What will you do at the pillow end? Will the pillows go on top of the quilt, or do you want a pillow tuck?
So for a quilt with a 5" drop and no pillow tuck it would be 63" X 80"
To cover both mattresses, a 14" drop would be needed, so the quilt would be 81" X 89"

Tartan - those aren' t mattress sizes, they appear to be finished quilt sizes that someone suggests.
A full size bed is 59 x 78
I usually make quilts for a double bed large enough for a queen sized bed because most people don't use double beds any more.

My answer would be how does he want it to hang. Oh dear, let me rephrase that, how does he want it to fit the bed. I then take a measuring tape and measure what it would take to make it fit the way he wants it. I made a king size for my daughter and it measured 130 X 130.

Mattresses tend to be a lot thicker these days. As others have said, you really need to know how thick the mattress is, whether it's to cover the mattress and even hang below that, whether there's a footboard (if so, perhaps it shouldn't have much of a drop on the end, etc. So many questions...
