What ever method you use to baste, all that handling can leave yech on the fabric, and all the starch, and spray baste, would still make me wash a quilt before gifting. I love the way a quilt blooms and looks so much more cuddly after the first wash, and let's me know if I need to fix anything before gifting. If the giftee objects to my washing it first, they have just made sure it is the only one they get.
I have had way too many quilts used by young children, who have had "accidents" on the quilt. If I had not washed them first, poor little muffin would find themselves glued to the bed. Not on my watch!

The OP is not asking whether she should wash the quilt or not. She can't wash them as she is handing them over to someone else to be bound. She's asking if she can glue baste if the quilt isn't washed down the road. Personally I think glue basting would be the least reason to wash them.

In my opinion, yes, you must wash the glue basting out of the quilt. Glue attracts bugs and can stain the fabrics in the quilt. Since you put a lot of work into a quilt, why take the chance of glue ruining the quilt?

On another note, I found since I hand quilt, the glue was really hard to get my needle through. I have decided that for me, this did not work. I went back to spraying and loving it!!

I have a front loader and have no problems washing out Elmers school glue on the short wash cycle, warm and low spin, with a small amount of liquid Tide. Quilts are perfect after the washing.

This is a question regarding spray basting. Can you use it when you are using fleece as the backing?
