Thanks everyone. I wish I had known this. I just assumed that if JoAnn's had it prominently displayed with the calico it would be worth using. I put together a twin-size nine patch quilt and find that, after quilting half of it by hand, it's already too ratty to ever use. I am so upset - a complete waste of money and a LOT of time.

The muslin's on the front, actually -- it's a simple red & white nine patch, with the muslin being the white. It's formed a lot of tiny little pills that make it look grubby and dirty. I'm thinking about cutting it in two for cat quilts (finished by machine!) Very creative idea, though, ragquilter.
