I've handquilted for many years and i have to use a hoop. I also either thread or pin baste and start in the center. I think whatever works for you is the way to go

You could try an Aunt Becky. They are pretty inexpensive and they work.

I do not do much hand quilting now but when I do I do not like using a frame. It's too restrictive for me so I just prefer to have the quilt on my lap as I hand quilt - works out just fine.
