I have just finished hand quilting a twin size quilt for my daughter and I used 2 and 1/2 spools of thread to quilt, 150 yards each spool.
There are places where there is no quilting (more than 2 inches) but the fabric is very stable and tightly woven (it is 100% cotton drapery fabric) and I used batting made of cotton/bamboo. The backer is a muslin that was 60 inches wide so there is no seam (!!).
I am really tired of quilting this one.
I know with machine quilting there is a LOT more, but what do you all think about coverage when hand quilting?

I like less quilting for a softer look and feel. Yours looks perfect to me. The batting package usually tells the minimim distance for quilting, but I can't imagine less than two inches. Smile and pronounce it finished!

It's avery pretty quilt. Beautiful prints and colors with excellent quilting. Lucky daughter!

You have done a fabulous job. The batting package gives a recommended space to be quilted. This would appy to hand or machine quilting. Personally I think you have done more quilting on this than some do with machines. It's lovely, I say, CONGRATS!, your done! :)

Hand quilting, like machine quilting can vary alot in density of quilting. It is all dependent on what your batting requires and what kind of look you are trying to acheive. It sounds to me like you have enough quilting in this for your batting. If it looks like it has enough to you call it done and bind it up.

I think it looks great! I'd say call it finished and enjoy the fruits of your hard work!

I think it is great! I have a full sized quilt that I bought for when my Mom caame to visit last year and there wasn't time to finish a homemade one. It was hand quilted and I must say it has less quilting than I thought it would have. It is holding up nicely through use and washings. In some areas it is quilted at 2 1/8" intervals and then in the borders it is almost 11 inches apart. I like the way you have done yours. :)

You should be very proud of your hand quilting - it is simply gorgeous and a treasure! To me, it is personal preference. I love hand quilting.

What are the quilting requirements on the batting package? If you have fulfilled them? Then I would call it finished!

Forget what the batting requires in regard to the amount of quilting. It is the look you want and the amount you need for the pattern to give good stability. Also the use of the quilt. If a wallhanging, the batting can shift in hanging, if washed then might need more quilting for stability. If always used as a spread then less quilting because it doesn't get much hard use. I believe there should be a sufficient amount of quilting reqired for any of these reasons.

Your quilt is beautiful and stitches are very nice. I don't use a set amount when hand quilting, I just kind of quilt by what the pattern of my fabric is...I am looking for the puffyness of the quilt to be just what I want...I guess I think 6 inches in some areas but in other parts of the quilt more or it could be less...yours is awesome..
