I just have a simple brother sewing machine and the manual doesn't say how to oil it, so my question is where exactly does it need to be oiled and how often are you supposed to?

If I don't use it (I have a newer one that I use all the time), do I still need to take it in for service/oiling every year?
No you can oil it yourself but you need to get it out every once in a while in just run it for a few minutes, like once a year. that way you do not have to worry about it locking up on you and it keeps the oil covering the parts that need oil.

Rule of thumb, if your manuel doesn't say to oil it, then it's probably self oiling.

No such thing. There idea of self oiling is the bronze bushings are permeated with oil. Or the "plastic" bushings are permeated with oil.

But that does not mean you do not have to oil it. I have used these type of bushings and they need oil otherwise the bushing will wear and then you will have to replace the bushings.

The machine makers use this ploy to sell more machines and get you in the shop so they can make a buck off of you. Rule of thumb oil where metal moves on metal or the metal moves on plastic and you will not have the issues.

Sorry, I was misinformed. I'll be more proactive in oiling.

I have. My Juki drinks oil like you wouldn't believe. And I clean my Pfaff regularly.
