Sounds feasible, but I haven't tried it yet.
Okay, but what happens when the quilt or whatever is washed and put in the dryer? Does the drying of it again weaken it?

My mom at 86 years decided she didn't want to sew anymore. I too became the recipient of her stash of thread and lots of nice notions etc. I was beyond thrilled to get this HUGE stash of thread. I shared it with my DD as she is just beginning to sew for baby #2 who is on the way.
The thread dates to the 70's but still seems to be just fine as it's always been in a drawer.
My favorite find was her Wiss pinking shears that still cut like a hot knife thru butter!!
I feel so blessed! :)

The break test won't work on the rayon. I just quilted with two new spools of Sulky varigated rayon. It was not a strong thread. I didn't want to make a mistake because I knew it'd break if I pulled on it to remove it. Sewn in place for FMQ, I'm sure it's fine. I don't think I'd piece with it. It is beautiful on satin stitched items.

Threads can dry out. You could try putting them in the freezer for a few day or weeks then let them defrost for a few days. I read this can put moisture back into the thread and make it strong again.
