One of my favorite patterns and you've used great colors!
Madhatter's advice from experience seems really good when you study her quilt!

Has anyone else encountered this problem?
i've never had that happen. but the effort involved in setting the tension differently to accommodate the lesser diameter and then setting it back again is too great. also, it tangles like mad. and if you do need to remove it from the quilt, i dare you to find it.

I would not use the clear thread for a baby quilt. If there is ever a loose end, it sticks, pokes. It is not a good feeling.

Have you gotten your quilt quilted yet? I was going through pictures last night and found this one of a tumbling block. I sorta stitched "In the ditch", more like "over" the ditch. I used one of the connecting stitches (zigs and zags on each side of the center line). This quilt had wonderful 3-d look to it. One of my grandson's fell in love with it so I gave it to him.

You can follow them down easily if you stitch in the ditch. you only have to zig zag a bit. then go to the next "line" and down again. then across them all.
otherwise you could stitch 1/4 inside each section. that looks good too.

I would go with the SID too. Yes, it is a lot of work, but think how you will feel when it is completed. AND you don't have to do it all at once. Tell yourself you will set aside a certain amount of time each day. It will soon start to add up. It is gorgeous.
