I just finished a scrappy quilt. Ready for the binding, it was cut (sigh). It didn't look right as I was folding it to press. I've cut it only 2 inches wide, I meant to cut it 2.5 inches wide. What width of muslin will I need to made this fabric 2.5 inches wide. For some reason I just can't think this morning. I feel like I've been on a week long bender and I don't drink LOL.

All you need to do is sew a skimpy 1/4" seam. If not, add an inch of muslin and make sure it is on the inside when sewing the binding to the quilt. I am one of those people who use charity fabric and seems to always run short.

Take a look at Charismah's Quick Machine Binding with flange in the QB tutorial archive. I frequently use it when fabric is running out for binding. It allows you to cut 1st accent strip 1-5/8 and the 2nd strip 1-3/8 and you sew them together and machine sew them to the back. You then turn the binding to the front and stitch along the flange.

Thanks for the reminder. I have used this method in the past. Just couldn't think this morning. My quilt needs a little something extra. This will do the trick.

I use 2" binding all the time, it's actually my preferred binding, and I sew bindings on professionally. You end up with a quarter-inch wide binding on both front and back of quilt.

Another tip? DON'T press your binding in half. It will lay much nicer and fuller if you don't.

If your batting is not super thick I think your 2" strips will still work for a binding. I usually use 2 1/4", and think 2" would work fine.
