I'd just go with contemporary fabrics in a bold geometric design.
If you search Google Images for 'modern quilts' or 'modern wall quilts',
you'll get thousands of ideas, many of which could be made as wallhangings.

Maybe have her do the research for you, on what "modern" means to her :D My idea of modern and others ideas do not always match

She can pull up some pictures from the net to give you ideas of style and colors too :D:D:D

I think this could also mean that they do not like the "scrappy" look. Before I started quilting I used to use that term for non-scrappy quilt. Three or four maybe five fabrics but never more than that. I think if you show them the difference in a magazine you'll find that they just don't like scrappy. I don't like scrappy either. The room (if it's on a bed) always looks cluttered to me with a scrappy quilt on it. I prefer less fabrics - coordinated and with an overall design more than a "block" design. I also don't like BOM quilts for the same reason - too much going on.

How about a bargello using batiks?
A traditional pieced quilt using a black background and bright prints?

Have her go look thru the wall hanging patterns at Clotilde.com, Keepsakequilting.com, etc and see what she does like. There's a whole range between "modern" and Amish.

She needs to give you a picture if a design she likes along with color choices. Assumptions are the death of a relationship.

Everyone's idea of what's modern is different...

I am about to begin a Frank Lloyd Wright wallhanging for my DDIL.I have a book called Quilts in the Tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright by Jackie Robinson. I found it on Amazon.com.
