The Pa Dutch do bargello quilts all the time. How about one of the Jinny Beyer patterns? There are a number of free ones on her web site.

Moon Holiday, thanks for posting that picture. It is beautiful and I will bookmark. What a great way to use my bright fabrics. :-P

If she likes flowers, she might like a contemporary wallhanging like one of these. You can get more info on them at Dutch Quilter.com.

How about something like this?
Search All People Quilt, "Stepping Stones" is the pattern.

I don't know how big a quilt you might want -- here is a link to a quilt that I made. She has full size templates in the pattern.

My quilt did not want to be rectangular

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions.I'm sending them to her by email which should educate her on what's out there.

You might want to ask her what her definition of "modern" is. If she doesn't want an Amish one, it could mean anything. Does she mean modern fabrics, bright colors, a new pattern (vs 30's or 50's), etc? Her answer might help. If you go to Keepsake quilting's web site or Nancy's Notions or Clothilda's, she could look through their fabris, patterns or kits and tell you what she likes.
