I don't know what you are thinking of. But this machine uses only a bobbin thread, no top thread at all. The needle brings up a loop of thread and makes a stitch with it. The stitch looks like one length of thread, not two, but since the thread is doubled, a 40 wt. thread looks like a 20 wt., almost. Then there is an arm next to the needle that reaches over and catches the loop of thread to pull it aside so the next stitch is skipped. Then it repeats all over. There's also an arm down inside the bobbin area that catches the thread and pulls it to the side, I think to keep the tension correct on the stitch that is made. This machine is so totally unlike anything else you have ever used. It's really amazing.

There is a Singer chain stitch embroidery machine that is very similar in that it only uses a bobbin thread and the needle has a hook to catch the thread and bring it to the top. I'd love to get one of them some day - the older the better!

I love machines that have unusual mechanism for forming a stitch, and that is one reason I was very attracted to this machine. I'm getting motivated to get mine out and start using it. I've decided not to let myself start a new quilt top while working on the BH mystery, so maybe that will help get me working on my other machines (so far it's mostly the LA I've been working with).

Reading the helpful hints makes it sound daunting......I guess I'm thinking for it's price point it should not be so touchy..jmho. I'll stick to my old Viking which has a stitch that looks hand done using the mono thread......if I want that look......

My Bernina does a hand quilting stitch. For any Bernina users you may want to check it out.
