I'm working on some hexies and your tip is great. Keeping the centers the same color. thanks!!

When I go to the fabric shops they usually have a bucket/basket full of thread for $1.00 apiece. I pick a lot of those up for piecing like the hexies on the back. That way I'm not using my better thread. I have a lot of thread from estate sales that I use also. I keep those threads separate and only use for projects like hexies and yo yos. Going to press hexies flat anyway (at least I do). Just want to stipulate I use the better thread to join.

Excellent idea about using thread bought at Estate sales for doing the gathering stitch on the hexi's vs. what I know is good thread. I really like that idea I was going to throw some out but they now have a purpose that goes along with my NO waste policy!

I too printed out the hexies from TexasFreckles and printed them on card stock. I then took an old rotary cutter blade, not too sharp any more, and cut the hexies apart. I did use 2.5 inch fabric for 1 inch hexies and will post a photo when I finish putting them together. I used scrappy fabric, the centers and petals are coordinating fabric, with white around the entire flower. I am putting them together with green in between. I made 5 flowers and that should make a full size quilt. My granddaughter saw one quilt made and she asked who it was for. I said for me and she said she would get the GFG quilt. I told her she would not get that quilt as long as I was breathing!

Also due to weight I would think batting would not be needed unless you want a VERY warm quilt. She also has a book that shows this method. It is easy enough if you watch the show that the book probably wouldn't be needed unless you need more instructions or the patterns.

Hilary, This is such a beautiful quilt. Thanks for sharing the picture and all your tips. I have been using freezer paper to do my hexies. I put the fabric face down, then put the dull side of the hexie on top. I fold over the sides and iron. The waxy side holds the fabric securely. No basting and they come out nice. I do a whip stitch to connect them...but that blanket stitch looks better.
