Homespun Secrets??

Homespun Secrets??
Are there any tips for using homespun fabric? I'm making a very basic rustic flag wall hanging. The "star field" is "homespun", and has three stars appliqued on it. The stripes are just "regular" fabric. Had no problem sewing the star field to the stripes. SID between stripes. Now I want to echo stitch around the stars, but I just can't get it to "go"...barely feeds, bunches all up, and bobbin thread jams. If I remove the homespun, sew on anything else, it works fine. Put the homespun back in, it won't sew. This is the first time I've used homespun..is there something I'm missing?? This field is only 9 x 12...suggestions??

When you're sewing on other things, are they the same thickness? Is it possible that you're just encountering an especially thick portion of your quilt, and need to adjust the pressure foot? The only problem I know of with sewing on homespun is that it ravels so much, but you've already gotten past that point.

I've tried fiddling with the top tension, and made a sample piece with the same batting and backing, and with the homespun, I can't get it to sew correctly! Thanks for the input...think I'll try hand stitching it!

I think my machine doesn't like homespun!! I did some hand stitching, and then started putting the binding on...had a really hard time on the homespun part, once I got to the regular fabric.....zipped right along! I don't think I'm much of a homespun fan either Jan!!

Try putting water stabilizer on top of the homespun and then stitching on top of that. Some times fabric has a tendancy to pull apart and this really helps. When done you can mist it and the stabilizer will disappear, they also make a heat removable stabilizer. I use it alot for emb but also when things are being difficult to sew, it keeps the thread on top where it belongs.
