I would use a flat piece of wood instead of a dowel rod, something about 1/4" thick, inch or so wide and the length you need.

I hang mine with straight pins, and they leave no markings on wall.

I have a couple of wall spaces that I hang my quilts. One space is for a larger quilt, the other for smaller wall hangings. I have decorative cafe rods in both places just in different diameters to match the size of the quilt. I use decorative rings with the attached clip and space them about 12 inches apart so there isn't so much stress on the fabrics.

I use sewing machine needles to hang quilts. They are strong and leave very tiny holes in the wall.
