Default How do you save ideas for future projects?

I work/view from my laptop. Of course, I have a folder marked Quilts. I started out with a sub-folder for Pretty, when I see something I like. Now it is more organized into Scrappy, Panels, Borders, Fish, etc. I like to take ideas from different projects to create something new.
I sometimes open a Word document to save free items/instructions. The first thing I do is save the web address by simply clicking on the address in the bar and drag it onto the Word document. It will be saved there at the top, and I can visit by clicking the link that I created on my instructions page.
    And you?

I have a bookmarks folder for saved project pdfs, paper pieced and regular pieced.
I have two photo folders, one for my own finished quilts and bits, and oone for Quilty Ideas.
In that one I have some sobfulders, borders/strings/hearts etc. These come and go as I finish projects.
All my bookmarks and photo folders are gone through several times a year and "what was I thinking" or 'finished" are all deleted.

I never print something unless I'm ready to get started on it.

While I do have all sorts of things bookmarked on line, I still keep a physical notebook, a one-two inch 3 ring binder and use it until it is full maybe each year for the small size, some years are less active.... Most of what I do is more or less original, or at least not from a pattern so I don't have to worry about those. Typically I need to buy a new filler of graph paper about every year (50 pages) and I sketch out things, and I put my Bonnie Hunter mystery printed clues in there, as well printouts of other projects. When I make templates or other tools to help me trim, I will put those in a ziploc baggy and punch that into the notebook as well. Beats my old desk drawer/file folder methods of trying to save helpful things. Think I'm at my 4th or 5th notebook? This year is bright pink and easy to see

Sometimes I go a bit farther in design and do something in Electric Quilt. I've found it's good for me to put a hard copy in my notebook as I rather got out of the habit of using the software, even though I played with it a lot for years.

I like to be able to see ideas as I'm working on other things so I save my ideas on my laptop, but I also print out a copy and thumbtack it on the wall. I have a whole corner my sewing room covered with pictures of things I'd like to make.

I have folders on my PC under Quilting marked as "Future Ideas", "Scrappy Quilts" and so on so I can find them easier. If I see a quilt either on this website or somewhere online, I'll save a photo of it to remind me. Sometimes I'll take the idea into EQ8 and make my own version of it if I can.

When I was looking for ideas for the French Braid pattern, I saved a bunch of photos I found online in a folder under "Working on" for use in color arrangements, various ideas someone might have added to make theirs personal, etc.

I have other folders listed as "PP" for paper piecing, "Stars" for projects with star blocks and so on. Then if I save a pattern from a website, I'll put the PDF in their folder on my PC. Got lots of folders out there that's for sure. I try to save a photo of the quilt pattern along with the PDF pattern so I don't have to open it to see what it is.

It's interesting that this topic came up, because I've been thinking about it recently. Like others, I have saved hundreds (maybe thousands) of paper patterns (purchased and from magazines) and digital patterns, also pictures of quilts that I liked. I've made many EQ versions as well. Yet when I finish one quilt I have a hard time deciding what to make next. I think the problem is that there is too much to choose from, and although it's organized somewhat by type of quilt (scrap, paper pieced, panel, etc.) it's not organized by what actually interests me most. So I've decided to start a list of the quilts I'm most interested in making. And I intend to keep that list flexible, but fairly short. When the next "shiny new thing" comes along it may get added to the list, but it may be get deleted if that shininess wears off. I plan to have a mixture of types of quilts on my list, some quick and easy, some more complicated. Some will even be re-makes of patterns I've previously made. My list is just getting started, so I'm not sure how well this will work.

I have 5 or 6 three ring binders that contain downloaded patterns or idea photo"s all in plastic sleeves. At least once a year I go through the binders and remove items that I've changed my bind about, keeping the sleeves for the next good idea.

I save directly to a thumb drive. I am always worried that my computer will crash and all the patterns I have saved will be gone. I also have a file cabinet with some printed patterns. So many patterns, so little time.

I use Pinterest to store my ideas and inspiration. When my mojo gets low, I can always stroll through my Pinterest boards to revive it.

I used to have 2 3" three ring binders, magazine patterns, downloaded patterns, pictures. I decided I would never make some of them and downsized to one 1" binder. I bought plastic sleeves for them and have organized them into categories panels, batiks, size, ect... I also bought a small binder for patterns that were purchased, again all placed in sleeves. I too have a Pinterest page saved for ideas both of quilts and useful sewing hacks.
screenshot_20250130_053035_pinterest.jpg my favorite hack so far. Lol
