How many different colors of threads do you need for applique?

Do I understand correctly that when you ladies do applique, embroidery, quilting you don't use the same thread in the bobbin as the needle. i'm guessing i've wasted a lot of money on thread. i've always used both the same as i did in home ec in school not knowing any different. thanks for your help. sue

The Frosted donut is a group of bobbins, but, I don't use them in my machine, I use them for hand applique. Because they are small amounts of thread, they are more affordable than buying all those colors in regular size spools.
