How Much Do You Spend?
#41
I plead the 5th!
I can't even estimate how much. I have a habit of changing my mind frequently about which fabrics I'll use in the middle of a project. It took me the price of 3 quilts to get it right for my son's quilt. Not wasted money though, I used the original choices for other quilts and my stash. I keep saying I'm not going to buy anymore, but I've got no willpower! LOL
I have done a few just from my stash.

Oh this is a frightening thread. :hunf: Good thing I never read it before taking up quilting! Since I never have a project in mind when I buy fabric, nor do I keep an account of what my fabric costs, I have no idea what $$ I have in one. Nor do I EVEN want to know!

I don't keep track of dollars on each quilt because I buy year long and have a little store in my own room. So when I pick out a pattern, I go in and pull from my stash and if need be, go buy the rest that I need. There is always one fabric I don't have or need. Murphy's law. I hand quilt mine so no cost there, just my time. I know what I charge to handquilt for others. I don't sell my quilts so dont care about the costs, just if I have all the fabric I need. LOL. That is why my handquilting prices are lower because people put so much into the quilt top, the need a break on the quilting. If you ask me how much in front of my DH it would be less than 50.00. If you ask me when we are alone, the truth comes out..ROFL.

When I add in
front fabric
backing fabric
batting
thread for piecing
thread for quilting
electric for machine and light
gasoline to get to the store
rotary blades and other stuff
My average medium sized lap quilt is probably $200.00 to $300.00. Good thing I don't try to sell them, because if I had to add in my time, I would be charging whole bunches of dough.

I have purchased only 2 "quilt kits" and they ran about $160. Then with the batting and backing I would say $190. But with my stash which I continue to build on a weekly basis, the average would be about $150. So I guess I would have to agree with the others, any where up to $150 on the average. Of course this does not count my labor, time etc.
