The range on how much I spend depends on the type of quilt and its size. I probably will spend anywhere from $50 to $300+. Most of my fabric comes from scraps I gather from other people, which really helps to keep the cost down. I buy my batting either at Joann's with my coupon or through a friend who can buy wholesale, which keeps my costs down. And I usually try to buy my backing fabric when flat folds go on sale at a LQS. They go on sale occasionally for $1.99 a yard and I try to scoop up several when that happens, which isn't often.

The most expensive quilt I ever made was for my MIL, whom I adore. This was ten years ago and I had searched high and low for some good teal and blue-green fabrics. This was probably a year before those colors really hit the market. I lived in So Cal and finally found the fabrics at the shop up in Sisters, Oregon. My husband packed me up and off we went. We drove up there, something like a 14 hour drive, did our shopping, and turned around and went right back home. I made the quilt, which was one of those 1000 pyramid patterns, and it turned out beautifully. I have to laugh though because now I can find that color of fabric pretty much anywhere.

My costs depend on the size of the quilt. I try to buy my batting when Joann's has their 50% off batting sale (which they usually do once a month) and the same for my fabrics (or I use the coupons). I normally spend between $30 and $60.

My biggest expense is having someone do the quilting for me. It can run as much at $100.00 for a single quilt.

I just have to buy 2 bolts of flannel what ever they cost for fabric for the inside layer of the quilts I am making. I am done buying for now till I get my over sized stash down to a few boxes.

I just spent $85 for fabric for a baby quilt. I haven't gotten the batting, backing, or fabric for prairie points yet.
This definitely is not an inexpensive hobby NOR does it provide for inexpensive gift giving!
But we all know we love it!

That's really cheap. I just got a smaller than twin size quilt back from a longarm quilter and it was $150 plus shipping. When I send her my queen size quilts I expect to pay at least $300.

To date mine have run the gamut of anywhere from $80-$250. I have made lap, crib, twin, queen, etc. and I buy my fabrics almost exclusively from quilt shops (either online or locally). I try to only by when the fabrics are on sale. I buy my batting at Joanns when it is 40-50% off. And I buy thread almost every time I shop to keep stocked up on it (providing it's on sale).
I guess the key words here are sale, % off and sale! :-D

The last two lap quilts cost about $90 for the fabric. But it will be more when I add batting and the quilting.
