oh FQ's are the best fo making FQ quilts... I make one called a crumb quilt. A good sized lap takes 15 Fq's
Al lot of the shops are getting away fro FQ's and there was not one FQ at the expo all 1/2 yds and up....

If I like a color and is going to use in for probably piecing in a quilt 2 yds. If I think borders 2-4. Something that would be great for backing 6-8 or the whole bolt, if its available. Found some white on white at Joann's yesterday at took the rest of the bolt 7 yds. Would have taken more if they had it. Great for backings, piecing etc.! This was also my husband's really 1st trip with me buying fabric. LOL was absolutely amazed!

I use to buy fat quarters, but then realized how many I needed to buy to make a queen size quilt and it was not cost effective. I would say now since reading this site at least 3yrds . I usually don't buy fabric that I do not have a purpose for. Not enough space for a big stash and I always have something I am working on that I need fabric for.

If I can see using it as borders I buy 3 yards (metres) and if it is just a FOCUS print or a nice fabric I buy a yard.

Rarely to I buy 2 yards because it frustrates me when I measure it later and it isn't long enough for borders!!

...and after buying 1-2-3-9 yards of fabric, I am now on a self-imposed purchasing moratorium or the room runneth over.

If I just like it I get 2 yards. If I really like it I get 5 yards or more depending on the price. If I dream about it then I go back and buy all I can afford.LOL

I've always been a scrappy quilt lover and since I wanted to build a large stash on a budget, I would usually buy one yard pieces. When I was buying for a purple scrappy quilt, I bought 1/2 yard pieces of any purple fabric I liked and was on sale. I did the same thing when I was on a homespun kick - I have a big pile of half yard pieces! The only exceptions are for backing or borders or a wonderful bargain on something I love. Then I might get 3 or 4 yards. The result is a very large stash of 1 yard pieces!
