Another thing about basting the top and bottom; it works best to baste from the center out to each side. Basting from one side to the other can skew the top.

sometimes when i have this problem i sew the binding on the back and whip to the front ...i can ease in better by hand than when machine sewing the binding on

Nothing to add on what causes the problems he's having or how to fix to get it bound. But you may want to talk to him about the problems (I'm assuming he wasn't a quilter before the purchase of the LA) and suggest he look at some YouTube videos--maybe suggest both Dusty Farrell and Jamie Wallen since both are male and excellent quilters and teachers.
