I didn't press my binding

okay now I have a question. Do you guys leave the binding stick out from the quilt edge? I am often confused because if you take a 2 1/2 inch binding, sew 1/4 inch on both sides, it will stick out approx. 2 inches (give or take). I have always tried to pull mine snug with the edge of the quilt, which means I have way too much left over.

It's also how I do my bindings. If the cut width is off a tiny bit and you press...you can have a hard time trying to sew down after turning. With out that pressed seam...fudging the biding a tiny bit does not show at all.

Somewhere i read a post that said someone didn't press their binding before sewing it on. I tried it...it's my best binding ever. I machine sewed the binding on the back with a quarter inch seam. Flipped it to the front, folded it over and under to the front, then machine stitchedon the front. My mitered corners are neat and tidy. This is my new method...i actually enjoyed sewing on a binding!

I posted about that last winter when I did my last quilt, but I'm sure others have posted about it as well. Some quilting instructor had a youtube video and she explained that she didn't press her binding because you need just a little more on one side than the other because of the seam. So, I gave it a try. It went on beautifully. Why do an extra step if you don't have to. That said, if you are doing reversible binding, you still have to press it or it won't come out right.
