Default I got very lucky

A few weeks ago I starched my backing fabric overnight like I usually do.
Didn't pre-wash. It's a white fabric with grey, black, red and blue printing.
Never thought this would bleed. When I ironed the fabric the next day
I noticed that the red had bled. Yikes. Too late. Since I was making this
quilt for myself I didn't want to wash and start all over. So I just carried on
and quilted then washed it with some color catchers. Lo and behold
the red bleeding is gone. Happy dance.
I never thought it would go away because I ironed the fabric more than
once...with starch then when I glue basted my quilt sandwich.

Happy for you that you were able to fix the bleed.

You were definitely lucky. I had a piece of red bleed (after I had thought I got all the color out) and it did not all come out. I was bummed.

Lucky you! If the bleeding hadn't disappeared you could always say that you planned it that way! Who could question that?

A similar thing happened to me. I washed a quilt I had just made for my mother and didn't notice the red had bled onto the white. Threw it into the dryer and then found the spots. Someone here told me to throw it back into the wash with another color catcher and sure enough it came out this time. I was sure it was a goner since I'd thrown it into the dryer but those color catchers are great.

That is exactly why I dye-set all vibrant colors -- reds, oranges, blues, really bright or dark greens --It's a whole lot easier to take care of the possible problem long before I cut a piece for a block! Jeanette

I must try rewarding my lone star which after its first wash the red bled. It was a sample for a class I was so upset. But used it as a teaching aid.

Color catchers have come to my rescue more than once! Once, water came through a window into my quilting space after a hard rain. One of my quilt tops was touching the floor and acted as a wick for the water. Some of the reds had bled. With the help of both the color catchers and Synthropol (spelling?), the bleeding disappeared! What a relief....
