    another fix would be to bring your bobbin thread to the top (needle down/needle up) at both ends of your line then you can thread the strings onto a needle and bury them. that way no knots, no over stitching

    One way to end or begin at the tape is to pull thread from bobbin and take the top thread and bottom and with needle thread back inside the batting. This, of course, takes time but gives a nice ending.
    Another possibility is to shorten your stitches for the last 1/4" or so.
    The stitching always will show darker if you are using a contrasting thread from the background.
    I usually backstitch one stitch.
