I made these for 2 little girls that were born very close together in the same family. I used some of the same fabrics placed differently in the quilts and then changed up the backings and bindings so they would not be exactly the same. I used MSQC pattern called double slice. This may work for you using fabrics for little boys. It goes together very quickly.

I had twin granddaughters. I made two quilts with the same design (appliquéd birds) but each quilt had a different setting square pattern. They were of the same line but different patterns.
and
from a distance the quilts look almost the same, but the fabrics really are different. The girls are almost 5 now, and the know exactly which one belongs to which girl.
For a boy, you could appliqué animals or trains or trucks, among many other alternatives.

It's called Ellen's Star. It would be wonderful if someone could work it up as a 36" square in EQ – I haven't had time to play with it there!
