What pattern would you use/how would you arrange them?

I was poking around her in the forums and found a challenge to make a d9p square every day for so many days and thought that might be fun to try just using odds & ends scraps. I was just wondering though, what arrangement would look the best when you're not using yardage and able to make an obvious pattern.... also, would you start with 5" squares or?

Not that I need to start another project, but at least it's not intimidating since there's really no pressure with just making one block. :-)

I just did a fairly scrappy d9p using 5" squares. If I did another I would pay more attention to which squares went where. In other words, which ones went in the corners and didn't get cut. IMHO I'd try for identifying lights and darks, then pick one or the other for the corners and stick with one color/fabric/value for the centers. I haven't done it yet, that's just what I'd try :-) d9p blocks are so fun and forgiving you just can't really go wrong, don't you thiink? Good luck!

I did a scrappy turtle d9p -- only 'non-scrappy' part was the fabric in the center block, it matched the borders.

other than that, as long as it was turtles, it went in the quilt!! =)

i made one of those, but i used 6" squares only b/c that's the size template i had! & i had sqs left over from other projects...you can use whatever you choose!
you could always try a few different sizes {from scraps} & see which one you like the best...

I'm working on a D9P now. Using 10" squares. Choose one dark and one medium 10" square plus one light 5" square to make one block. Cut the 10" pieces into 5" squares. When laying out the block, I put the light color in the center and the dark on the corners - then sew together. That's just one way to do it. Even though no two blocks are the same fabric, it gives a hint of a pattern rather than total scrappy. Have fun!

Jetnica, thanks for the pic - that is so cute! And I appreciate all the tips and links. I can read something once, and think I get it, but since I'm still so inexperienced, it doesn't usually stick. I love all the reminders and tips!!!

As far as arranging, I'm wondering if it was kind of a dumb question -- in a d9p, is it just typical that just two of the diagonal blocks get turned out and the other two stay the way they are (to make the finished block)?

On the one I'm working on, I wanted to feature the darker colors I originally put on the corners, so after the 9-patch was cut I did not turn anything, but exchanged the top left with the lower right. I'll try to take a photo tomorrow to show you. You're right - there's so many ways to assemble the blocks to get exactly what you want!
