Instead of binding--turning in the raw edges?

Sure sounds the same to me. I have birthed quilts many times. It's fast, secure too. And is done by machine rather than hand stitching. I allow about 1/4 inch seam along the edges, then turn the quilt right-side-out. (birthing it) After birthing I usually sew another seam around the quilt close to the edge, just to give it a finished look. Great for hangings, table mats, other small items.

Onemoe, I was thinking of the birthing method for sandwiching and finishing a quilt too when I read about this knife method. Basically, the seam around the edge of the quilt would be nearly the same. Usually the birthing method involves machine sewing the edge though. The quilts I've seen done that way hold up very well in washing. However, anything that's hand sewn seems to me to have the potential for being less secure, unless the stitches are very small.
