aaactuuuaaallyyy..... now that i think of it......
if you did piano keys for one of the long strips and strips for the other long strip, if they are the the same width across (not length), you will get veeerrryyy interesting pieces.
following this thought further out, you could just use striped fabric instead of piano keys.
hey, if anyone does any of this, let's see it. i know it will work, but i'm too lazy to follow through.

Question on this method.
If you take two 2.5" strips and lie them next to each other you have 5".
If you sew a .25" seam up on side you loose .25" of each strip which should
give you a 4.5" stripe.
How come they say your sew piece should be 4.25" instead of 4.5"?

Do not follow the directions exactly ... follow the technique.
sew two strips together, no matter what size, measure across your resulting strip, and then cut a strip that is the same size as your two-strip piece ...
the technique is what is important.

Omak is correct. The technique is what's important. I'm going to eventually one day try this method in a miniature size so I won't be paying attn to the size she says to start with. It won't matter just as long as my strip pieced section is same width as my top layer which may be strip pieced also.
Since seeing this method, it has given me many ideas of trying other blocks with it which is what I'm most interested in.
Sure hope everyone will post pics of trying different things with this technique. We would love to see them!!

Thank you butterflywing for your help too! Yes, the blocks can turn out to be very interesting looking if you guys experiment a little with it.

When my Air Force Major son was a little boy, he had a favorite thing he drew ... a little mouse with the BIGGEST ears!
At church, I would allow the kids to draw (working toward having them take notes or re-write the sermon, whichever came first <g>) and, he was doodling this little mouse over and over again.
Finally, I found a page in my Bible that had space at the end of the book ... and gave him my Bible to draw it in ... then, dated it. Someday, someone will find my Bible (when I am no longer using it <g>) and read some good things I wrote in there from sermons, and that little mouse.
WHen I get time today, I may just get a picture of him so you can put him up on your wall! I even dated it, so it will be interesting to see if the date has any significance to you <g>
