Default Janome 6600 Opinions please

My Mom is considering a Janome 6600. She does a lot of raw edge applique. Is this a good machine for this application?

Thanks, Watson

I do raw edge applique on my old Bernina 1530. I think most machines have a buttonhole stitch if they are computerized. She really needs to test drive various machine to see which suits her best.

I've had my Janome 6600 for 5 years, and still love that machine!!! I have done a lot of raw edge applique on it, and it works beautifully. I can't think of anything negative about the 6600, and my repairman (who has repaired all makes of sewing machines for over 30 years) says he gets more positive comments about the 6600 than any other machine.

I was at Paducah and tried out the Janome 6600 and the Baby Lock Soprano. The only reason I am leaning toward the Soprano is the auto pivot function, which is wonderful. They are both about the same price. Make sure you have a dealer nearby that can teach and repair.

I have a Janome 6600 and absolutely love it. I have had it for approx. 6 yrs and bought it used from our local quilt shop. They do yrly maintenace on it and it runs fantastic. I would never upgrade as I love this machine too much. Don't know too much about raw edge applique but the 6600 is terrific to make pieced quilts on. Good luck on your search

YES this is a wonderful machine. I use a blanket stitch for my raw edge. They are fused on first.

I have a 6600 and like it a lot, although it does have it's own personality compared to my older model Pfaffs. It is a big machine with a nice throat for quilting large items. It is a strong and can sew through a lot of layers easily. I like the needle down feature. I do not do a lot of applique so can not answer to that. On a negative, I almost always have to use "leaders" when sewing any seam at all. The feed dogs definitely do not catch like the other machines I have. Also, the bobbin case gets very linty and has to be taken apart from time to time to clean. By this I mean unscrewing the whole bobbin case area and cleaning deep inside.

I agree that having to unscrew the plate to clean out the bobbin is a bit of a hassle, but that's the only negative I find about mine. It's a great machine!

I do primarily raw edge applique on my 6600 and I love it. I bought it over a juki machine, even though it was more expensive, due to the recommendation of my sewing machine repair guy. It is not fussy about thread. I haven't found a thread I can't use. I sew a lot more since I bought this machine I just posted some Day of the Dead quilts in pictures. Here is one done on the 6600 with a lot of raw edge applique. If your mom lives in the San Diego area she is welcome to come try out my machine.
