Jelly Roll "race" quilt - Horrible

I've done a couple of the "race" quilts, although I did them at home by myself. I didn't find it boring at all. One of them I cut the 2.5" strips myself from every piece of left over pink fabric I had in my stash. I didn't worry if the lengths were 44" or not. I sewed the strips together on the diagonal because I think they look better that way. This quilt has turned out to be cute as all get out - because of the various pinks (some solids, some prints), it looks like "Arizona Sunset," so that's what I've named it. It is for a great niece who is a 4 year old little diva and I'm about finished with some of the straight line quilting. I'm using straight lines 1/4" away from the seam lines on every other strip, including sewing around the ends (making the quilting lines a long rectangle every other strip). I'm going to then do some fancy stitching in a few places and then applique her initials on it and probably add a few pink bows. The backing is a pretty sparkly "lime" green with the butterflies of all different colors - pinks, purples, yellows, etc. It's going to be really cute if I ever get finished with all the quilting lines!!!
I've also done one in the Texas 2.5" jelly roll. There are a couple of strips I wish I had left out of the stack because they just do not fit in. But it will be cute when it is finished. The backing fabric is a red with bluebonnets on it and it will wrap to the front instead of having an applied binding. I'm then going to cut out some appliques of Texas in that red fabric and place them in several places on the front of the quilt. I'm making this one to hang over the leather sofa in our den. I'm a native Texan, lived here all my life, and never in my born days have I had a single piece of Texas art or craft in my house. I'm 64 years old - guess it's about time!

Two of my daughters and I did the Jelly Roll Race quilt this summer. We did not race however. We did sew and visit and had a wonderful time. They also found a box of pinwheel blocks that I had made out of scraps and confiscated them for a row across the top and/or bottom of the quilt. It really added pizzaz. We turned out three nice quilt tops in one day and had time to eat out and go to the quilt shop and enjoy each other's company. I have made a couple since and I like the way they turned out.

One jelly roll is normally 40 strips ... so those 40 strips @ 40 inches give you 1600 ....as in Jelly Roll Race 1600 x 2" (finished seam).
Of course, it's a little less, because of all those seams, but whose counting?
Then when the first seam is sewn you have 800 x 4"
2nd .... 400 x 8"
and so on .........
So if you used 50 @ 40, that'd be 2000
1st .... 1000 x 4"
2nd ..... 500 x 8"
3rd .... 250 x 16
125 x 8
62-1/2 x 32
31-1/4 x 64
As you can see the the sizing kind of goes wonky on this one.
However, if you try other numbers .... 55, 60, etc. you may find it works more to your liking
And of course, who says you have to stick with 2" (finished) strips?
You could cut other widths.
So pen and pencil ... and your favourite cuppa and calculate away!
(and yes, some of the other numbers do work in better proportions than the 50 I did for you)

The technique is easy enough (even if I did purchase yardage and cut the 2.5" strips myself), but sitting at a sewing machine for that amount of time is not my idea of fun!! That first row was a killer!
I remembered there is a reason my ironing board is set up on the opposite side of the room from my sewing machine. I LIKE and apparently NEED the small breaks away from my machine.
I thought I was going to die from boredom!!!
