Just to put in my two cents worth. I am in Managment at our local walmart and this definitely isn't anything I have heard of. The only thing I do know is that yes they are doing away with the fabric dept. in areas that don't sell as much. Like in my town we have no other fabric shop so ours will stay but some of the bigger towns that has competition like hobby lobby, joanns or moniques they will probably do away with it. Just thought I would pass on what I know.

Wouldn't THAT be nice!

I don't believe the Walmart/Joanns thing is true, though. Too bad! I will miss our Walmart fabric when it's gone!

Just a note as to unexpected e-mails. Like junk mail of the paper variety, lists are sold/traded between companies and information brokers. Usually, this is on the terms of use in your registration for the original site you registered to - often phrased as "business partners".

Contests, websites, "survey sites" are all just big data collection devices. I'm sure I am not the only one who came across the "free quilt patterns" that were 45 minutes of data entry, leading, not to free patterns, but to spam.

I was recently in a Wal-Mart Super store in the Eastern Panhandle of WV. The Fabric Dept appears to have been expanded. They have one long wall of fabrics, then 3 free standing aisles with bolts on end, on both sides of the aisles. I don't ever recall seeing this store have so MUCH fabric. There was no one to talk to or ask, but I have a feeling this store will be keeping its fabric department for a while.

Has anyone else observed changes in their fabric department locally?

I mentioned this long-standing rumor to a Joanne’s employee the other day and with a chilled shutter she exclaimed, “Let’s hope not!”

Yup, that about sums it up.

It does not make any sense at all.

First Wal-Mart shut down their fabrics departments.

Then buy JoAnn and send them a bunch of crap? Is this a consipiracty to kill the American creative spirit?

And like someone said....their stock holders would surely have had to vote and be informed about this. I too have looked at Snopes and can find no evidence. Rumor is just that. Rumor. GOSSIP!!!

I posted before that I have four Walmarts within driving distance and all still have fabric. These stores can't keep fabric in long enough. Always selling out. I still can not understand why Walmart decided in the first place to get rid of the sewing depts. supposely to bring in packaged crafts? Even in stores where the sales were not very high the fabric was a good leader (industry term, something that brings more customers in). All I can think about is a bunch of ninety year olds that have done nothing but been catered to all their lives with never picking up a needle making this grand decision. Of course I know this is not what happened, but geez whoever was the grand idiot should be in this group. Especially at a time when sewing was getting so popular and still is. It just totaly baffles me about how such poor decision makers with obviously no common sense gets put in the position to be making these decisions. But somehow it seems to always happen. Geez I am on a rant today. Maybe a nap will do. I think I will put the covers over my head and make the world go away, well just for a little while, I realy love this world.

I was at walmart the other day and the woman in the fabric dept told me that corporate sent out a letter stating that they could not order fabric any more and that the store was going to be remodeled in April and the fabric would no longer be there. I was obviously very upset!
