Not too closely together or you perforate the material and it will rip easily. Keep it at about 2.5 and you should not have too many problems. Choose a higher number (4+) if you are basting or gathering.

How else are you going to learn if you don't ask questions. Everyone here is willing to help you out, so don't be afraid to ask. If you are new to sewing how would you know?
I think my machine setting is for 10-12 per inch at the moment, but it varies with the fabric and exactly just what I am quilting. Remember there are really no dumb questions here or anywhere else. Asking is how everyone learns.
