I wouldn't use cat litter. If it is scented I wouldn't want the scent in my microwave you don't know what it's made of and I wouldn't want to put food in it after. I make them with rice and it does smell however.................I add orange peel or lemon peels along with the rice. When you peel the fruit cut the peel into small pieces and levae out to dry, flip them after a day or two. I add the peel to the bag. I also use cinnamon stick, cloves and nutmeg. Some time esential oils. If you add one of the above it has a lovely scent and you don't have the funny smell of rice.

You can also use beans or lentils maybe they won't smell like the corn or rice.

Just Google 'buckwheat hulls'. Yes, they hold the heat well and being angular, don't shift so much.

I've used mine for over 5-years and no smell.

Be really careful using grains in the microwave oven. Keep and eye on it and if it starts to smell like it is burning, pull it out as they dry out over repeated heatings and can catch on fire.

We use wheat, and when we heat the bags in the microwave we put in a small (microwaveable) glass half filled with water (keeps it moist and should prevent burning).

I might try this one...I eat a ton of cherries during cherry season.
