Default Kona cotton

I noticed that our local Joann Fabrics carries Kona cotton, and I wonder if it is the same quality as in local and online quilt shops. Anyone have any opinion or knowledge to share?

Mine too! I'll still find a use for what I got (ordered online at Joann's) but it's not going to be in the project that I originally had in mind.

Kona Fabrics and Robert Kaufman Fabrics

Read post #32 by Robert Kaufman.

Does the end of the bolt say "Kaufman Kona Cotton"?

We just had a JoAnn's open here. They sell Kona cotton and it feels a lot different from the other solid cottons they sell. You can feel and see the Kona is thicker. Our Hobby Lobby also sells Kona and it feels/looks the same as JoAnn's Kona. I buy it when there is a 60% off coupon or use the 40% coupon at Hobby Lobby.

Yes, I am glad to see the link. I have also found that the Kona at JoAnns is not as nice as the Kaufman Kona. This discussion comes up from time to time on here.

thanks for the link and pointing out that if it does not have the official company branding, it may be another product just using the Kona name... i've seen this before... one has to shop carefully.

Have to add that I don't particularly like the Kona cotton I have bought at my LQS because I find it too heavy and stiff. I usually buy Moda solids. However, I just took a class that calls for a foundation, and the instructor recommended using Kona white rather than tear away paper (too annoying) or muslin (too stretchy and light). Next time I'm in Joann's I will look and see what the end of the bolt says.
