Sounds strange but I have used blankets as batting. Drapes well and doesn't bunch up as much.

That doesn’t sound weird at all.

A lot of people have hard floors now, and babies thump down quite a lot as they’re learning to move and sit and crawl.

Thank you all so much for all the suggestions. I think I might need a bit of padding for a floor quilt. I was babysitting the other day and at 6 months he’s bonking his head on the floor a bit!

I like all these ideas I’ll have to go away and think a bit more.

I was going to post the photos of the quilt that my son and DIL do use so it’s not that they don’t like quilts. I made one for the baby (first grandchild) and found it stuffed up high in an inaccessible cupboard in their house. They must not have liked the design, I guess. Not baby enough? I haven’t asked my son about it yet. Anyway I’ve recovered and am determined to make a “good” one for my other son and other very lovely DIL!

If you can access my “album” you can see the seascape quilt I made that they use. The “quilt for Dylan” is the one they don’t use.
Thr seascape quilt has a really soft thin polyester batting but it’s not as drapy as I’d like. The fire quilt has a better quality polyester batting but it’s still a bit stiff. I’ll look at fleece and bamboo and see what they feel like.

    Thank you.

Dylan’s quilt has a good quality cotton batting but I can’t test it for drape unless I raid the cupboard!

Thank you for your support and suggestions!

Dylan’s quilt is lovely! Maybe they thought it was too nice for a baby to use? ,

I told my DIL that mine was sturdy enough to be pulled backwards through the crib bars, wet. That seemed to give her the idea to use it.

I wonder if you could make a separate pad to go under the new one and leave the quilt drapey. The parts would need to stick together, though.

My family has asked for soft quilts, meaning not a lot of quilting. That's why I use MS Best Blend batting. I have done matchstick quilting using this batting and the quilts have good drape and soft. It's on discount today too so a good time to buy a small size and test it for yourself.
