Default For Long Arm Quilters

Quick question, how Thick are the rulers you are using? I have a couple of rulers that are 1/4 thick, and it seems like I need a little more thickness on the ruler, or a thicker quilting foot. Any Ideas?

Quilting rules are 1/4 inch thick so you have the proper rulers....rotary cutting rules are about 1/8 inch thick and not thick enough. I don't know what machine you have. There are different types of feet used for long or mid arms. I have an APQS machine and need to use the thicker ones for ruler work and I have thinner ones for free motion work. I would check with your machines dealer to see if they have a specific foot to use. It would help if we knew what machine you have as someone here might know what you need.

Sewingpup, thanks for the info.
I checked out a few sites, and think my hopper foot is my problem. I have two of them and both the feet are flat, no height at all. I saw others that were 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch in height. I think the 1/4 inch would be better than my 1/16 flat foot. Lol thanks

Yes, you need that wider foot that will bump up against the ruler. My foot is 1/4" tall so the ruler doesn't jump over it and get into the needle area.

A ruler foot, whether hopping or gliding has a wall on it that glides along the ruler. Check the website of brand of machine you have, as most have model specific feet available.

1/4'' you just have to watch you don't push on the foot to hard by the ruler , ask me how I know

Is your hopping foot set too high?

My biggest problem was having the ruler come up Over the top of the hopping foot. Then HQ came up with a hopping foot with a higher profile, solved that problem.

My longarm would go right over a 1/4” ruler and would be a terrible thing- for the machine and probably for me. All of the longarm rulers I have purchased were just a hair under 1/2” thick. I’ve only purchased longarm rulers from HandiQuilter since my machine is a HandiQuilter Avante. I get a good deal. I tried my ( cutting ruler) once when I first tried ruler work. It was a disaster. Broke my needle, knocked the timing out of whack and bruised my finger. Learned my ( costly) lesson.

There are some longarm rulers with 3/8" thickness. Some people prefer those for the Innova, but I have always used 1/4" rulers with no problem.

I agree that your hopping foot is probably the problem, and it needs to be set at the correct height.
