This is from the Janome board

Here's what to do:
Increase the upper tension and use monofilament (invisible) thread on top.

Fill the bobbin with thread the colour your want to show on the top. for
instance, if you want your stitches to appear green, use green in the bobbin.

Select Mode 2, Stitch 21, 22, 23 or 24. I found 22 works best.

How It Works:

The bottom thread is drawn up to the top by the increased upper tension and the
monofilament thread doesn't show, thereby making the stitch look hand quilted.

If you have trouble with the monofilament thread feeding, put the spool in a jar
at the back of your machine and skip the antenna and thread it from the metal
loop on top of the machine.

This is a very slow process but if you have the time, it really looks pretty
good.

I use a clear thread on top, a color bobbin. Tighten my tension as high as I can, an use the reinforcement stitch. That is the stitch that goes 2 up and one back

The new JUanome Horizon12000 has a stitch like that. Haven't tried it yet.

Janome has a built-in stitch called the sculpture stitch which you can use monofilament in the bobbin and the color of your choice on top and it looks a great deal like hand quilting.

I have an inexpensive Brother EX-660 that has a hand quilting stitch. I haven't tried it yet.

There is a Japanese machine that looks like hand quilting, they sell them at one of the LQS. Can't remember the name, surely someone on the board will know. It was very very pricy, considering it only did one thing, straight stich. But did it very well!
