Here is a link to a good Youtube video on machine finishing quilt binding. There are two parts to it; it's a good idea to watch both.

Leah Day has a great website too, with lots of video demos for different techniques:

I have used the fancy decorative stitches with bright variegated thread to top stitch the binding down & I have used a plain old straight stitch very close to the edge with thread that matches the binding--black is my favorite. I think they look great. Oh, and I always use my walking foot to put on binding. That helps tremendously no matter which stitch I use.

So sorry to hear about your neuropathy. I have it too. (Diabetes) There is no shame in machine stitching it to the other side. I have difficulty even doing that! When I do, I use a decorative stitch. If you don't have that capability, a nice zig-zag stitch looks nice and if all else fails, a straight stitch works too. Hint: Use lots and lots of pins! Best wishes to you!

Here's other really good instructions for binding by bringing the back of the quilt over on to the front to form the binding. I sewed it down using my blanket stitch.

I hate pins on bindings, I "baste" mine with skinny strips of heat and bond lite or wonder under to hold it exactly where I want it to be before I machine stitch the edge. This works well no matter what side you are bringing the binding over. If you have machine basted around the perimiter( I stitch just shy or a scant 1/4 inch) as long as the strip of heat and bond ( lite) is less than you will not have it showing on the quilt.
Once I have fused the binding into place temporarily , I can just fly around the edge with the machine.

Thank you all so very much for your suggestions; they are wonderful and I think I'm ready to sew the binding completely on the quilt, without pins. Since I do large Quilts of Valor, this will be so helpful for me.

I love sewing it on with a decorative stitch. It's a pretty way to finish a quilt and saves my hands and fingers.
