As a genealogist, I lobby for including the maiden name as well as the married name. It only takes a couple of generations for pass-alongs to lose their archival history and that label can help prevent that. If it's a gift for someone outside the family, then I don't bother with including the maiden name.

My! How interesting to hear such diverse opinions on this! When I married, I added my DH's name to mine, so I have no qualms using my maiden name. In his culture, though, all women keep their name, rather than taking their husband's. I think, after trying to search our family lines, that having the maiden name on the quilts would be advantageous.

Just another reason to emphasize - Label your quilts!!!!!
My mother has two that were made in the 1850's or 1860's. There is no indication of who made them, only the family stories handed down. Mom wrote it down so it won't be lost. But it would be so much nicer to have the labels right on the quilts.

If for family, I use my maiden name, mainly because I was married more than once. If for someone I know only with my current name, I use that one.

I've used my maiden name, which is 10 letters long, only twice -- the first was a quilt made for my grandmother when she was 86 or so. My first and middle names are after both parents and my grandmother - JOAN LORRAINE - JO, the first two letters of John and AN, the first two letters of Anita and my grandmother, Lorraine. I wanted my grandmother to see my entire name on the back so it became rather lengthly to add all of them. She passed away several years ago. I think my aunt, her only remaining child (now in her late 70's) has it. The second one was for my father when he got remarried. I gave it as a wedding gift. His wife was very insistant that what she brought to the relationship was to stay totally within her own family so I wanted this quilt to stay within ours. My father brought it to San Diego when they divorced last year and has recently passsed. My younger brother knows I want it back but it may never get home to me.

Because of several marriages & divorces, and the messy name changes that came with them, when I married this last time (& it is a last time :) ), I made my maiden name a second middle name. I use both names now as an un-hyphenated last name. So, yes, I use both my maiden & married name on my labels.

I hyphenated it so I'm always both names.

I use my maiden name and my married name. I feel that just because I married my husband (whom I love dearly)....it doesn't change who I am. I also want future generations to know my full name.

Good question. I agree with Victoria L - I use my maiden name as middle name on quilt labels, but I don't use it otherwise. I use my 'real' middle name on everything else + my married name. When I got married a million years ago, women had not started keeping maiden names when they married.

My DD kept her maiden name when she married, which has really simplified things now that she's divorcing her horse's A about-to-be-ex. She has her own business in her own name, so she doesn't have to change anything regarding the business.
