Making an I Spy "activity" mat/blanket. Any ideas?

Tee Hee!!
I am now making two. One is a quilt with lots of texture and interesting ISPY stuff about 45 x 45 and the other is an 'activity' mat about 27x27 with zipper, window, velcro shapes, etc. I'll post pics later this week.
Thanks for all the great ideas!! You guys are the BEST!!
......... and some rows of piping, side by side for large corduroy effect
Corky .... how LARGE is this becoming now? :)
I'm now picturing this growing to the extent that Little six foot Johnny is taking it off to University to cover his oversized bed! :)

I love the pockets and the buttons!
Most kids have trouble tying into the first or second grade so you might want to hold off on that one -- also you do not want the shoelaces chewed -- I have six kids and have had some pretty weird thngs go through the system.

MarySews, I had to laugh at your comment. I 'mothered' 2 brothers and three sons - and I know what you mean!!

What a great idea! I saw a Ispy quilt that had blocks with appliqued letters that spelled out the kid's name. The letters were of different textures of the blocks they were attached to. It personalizes the quilt and adds to the "learning" aspect. Anything that crinkles draws amazing laughs from my little guy so I would definatly include that.
As a mom to a 2-year old, I have learned the hard way that buttons are big no-no's. No matter how well I attach buttons, his little expert fingers can unattach them within just a few hours of play.
