a regular colored pencil shoud be avoided. Most have wax in them and do not wash out. Chalk brushes off. The General Multipastel in white, light grey or dark gray brushes and washes out. When you use any pencil wipe of or erase as much as you can before washing. The new cermaic pencils in white work well with dark fabrics.

I read this earlier today but I had to wait until I got home to respond. I only use Sanford Verithin pencils in Metallic Silver. I read about these pencils a few years ago in a quilt magazine. They are wonderful. I used to buy them at my LQS (she no longer sells them) but I recently bought them at my local college bookstore. They are not "quilting pencils". I use an eyebrow pencil sharpener to sharpen them. I have many other types and brands, but these are the best. I only use that color, even on very light fabrics.
