If no one has asked for anything in the mending basket you should play with your stash. I have a theory, if no one asks for an item in the mending they don't need it and will not miss it. The same thing applys to things that need ironing. lol

I once won a prize at a banquet for being the person whose children had outgrown their clothes while waiting for them to be ironed. Sadly, it was accurate. Even then, I'd rather make something new than iron or mend.
